Can Jag Beat BMW? Jaguar XF vs BMW 550i @ the Track

MORE TRACK INFO @ INSIDELINE.COM: blogs.edmunds.com Last May, the newly introduced Jaguar XF surprised us. It went head to head with the best midsize luxury sedans from Germany and came out on top. It was fast, comfortable and surprisingly competent through turns, but of course, that was the top-of-the-line supercharged model. For 2010, the Jaguar XF gets a pair of all-new 5.0-liter V8s: one normally aspirated in the XF Premium, the other supercharged in the new XFR. We’ll test an XFR soon, but today Inside Line is the first to take the new non-supercharged 5.0-liter-powered 2010 Jaguar XF Premium to the test track. Rated at 385 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque it’s not quite as powerful as the former 4.2-liter supercharged V8, but it’s close. To see just how close, we brought back a 2009 BMW 550i to see how the new Jag stacks up when it’s not getting help from a supercharger. Given that the BMW is giving up 25 hp and 20 lb-ft of torque, we expected a close contest – and got one.

They didn’t use the supercharged version (same price as the 550i) which makes this video utterly pointless. The only conclusion that can be drawn is that the Jag sounds so much better!

  2. PoorIllyrian says:

@303Libertine HAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHA OMFG AHHAHAHAHAHAH YOU HAVE FAIL PLS DIE

  3. 303Libertine says:

The point, which went sailing over your head, is that the video is comparing the wrong models of car. Might as well compare a 550 to a 535 or an A6 with an S6. You can’t take a higher-end model and compare it to the base model of another. It’s a poor comparison. And, BTW, a Jag XFR would crush an M3. LMAO@U!

  4. venomXrevolter says:

@303Libertine u want to compare the performance of 2 cars based on their price ? what the fuck ? ….yes bmw has high prices unlike many better priced car companies. still bmw has better performance, throw in the stock M3 and lemme see if any jaguar, ford, chevy, audo or mercedes will step up

  5. bobbypathak123 says:

    good jaguar! :) well done.

  6. sovietninja3 says:

    @LouieRocks88 you’re funny

  7. LouieRocks88 says:

It’s funny how people argue with each other when in fact they have never owned or drove one of these cars and probably never will.

  8. moneshmahtani says:

    Jag: fat rich girl
    Bmw: sexy blonde girl
Oh plus jag is bought out by tata and ford an indian company!! YUCK!!!!! WHO WANTS A CAR MADE BY AMERICAN SCUMBAGS AND INDIAN APES??? SO BMW ALL THE WAY!!!

  9. MrBullterrier598 says:

brits know how to make a car themanthump1

  10. 303Libertine says:

The 550 should be compared to a supercharged XF (equally priced), not the base model, and the base XF compared to a 535 (equally priced again). In either comparison, the Jag owns the BMW.

Considering the base XF did so well against the 550 only shows how terribly over-rated BMWs are. The only good BMW is the M5 and that just barely outperforms the Jag XFR even though it costs much more and has a much rougher ride. Nothing beats a British suspension.

  14. 3078900 says:

  17. krocialblack says:

@stelmos1 Your comment is a joke. BMW fanboys are a joke. BMW’s are alright, but their overrated. Plain and simple. BMW’s are for lack minded teens and arrogant adults and you know it. That’s why you’re in defensive mode. See one beamer, you seen them all. A Jaguar is still the classy car it always has been. You like beamers fine, but they’re still the most overrated car to come out of Germany.

  18. stelmos1 says:

beemers are over rated wat you drive a dodge neon? and i bet you going to reply with something perform and expensive lol.
lot of you guys dont have a stand up car and yet talk down to car you cant even afford period. some of you driving at 140mph you cant handle that speed your knees buckle lol. but someone else does any of these you critique them come on now

  19. BlameGame23 says:

God that was hot. I love you, Jaguar.

  20. 7477238 says:

@themanthump1 Sorry but the BMW will always be the better performer and better car all around. The only thing Jags do better than the German rivals is comfort, some BMWs especially M Sport ones do ride rather hard. German build quality is top notch, compare a mid 90s BMW, MB or Audi with a mid 90s Jag (provided you can find a running one) and see which one has held up better over the years.

Brits can’t make a car right, that’s why Ford and now Tata have had to take over.

  21. dirtydonki says:

@snoopitybloop ….and Porsche owns Porsche and a majority share in Volkswagen :)

  22. dirtydonki says:

There is no comparison. The XF is in a class of it’s own.

  23. snoopitybloop says:

@krocialblack Lamborghini is owned by VW. So is Audi

  24. CRAZYXBLACKXMAN says:

never seen such a series of comments where BMW was looked so down upon

  25. themanthump1 says:

face the facts… bmw(body made wrong) will never in a million yrs. touch a jag.
